UK nanotechnology research gets £90m in funding

Research into the commercial opportunities of nanotechnology will be backed by £90 million of investment over the next six years.

The government has said that nanotechnology is about making things "smaller, faster, stronger, more energy efficient or with new and useful properties".

The investment will be spent on collaborative research and a new network of facilities to help British business win a share of the developing global market, predicted to be worth over $1 trillion in a decade.

The funding is also securing additional industry and regional spending, and will provide a boost to future advanced manufacturing in the UK.

Science and Innovation Minister Lord Sainsbury said: "Today's investment will help UK companies take advantage of the exciting commercial opportunities offered by scientific advances in nanotechnology."

An independent inquiry into the benefits and risks of nanotechnology was announced on 11 June 2003.
