Obama: US Wants The UK To Be A 'United And Effective Ally'
Barack Obama has unveiled the US interest in the Scottish independence referendum, saying that the issue was ensuring the UK remains a “strong, robust, united and effective ally” but added the decision was “up to the people of Scotland”.
He said: "The United Kingdom has been an extraordinary partner to us. From the outside at least, it looks like things have worked pretty well” but that they have “obviously a deep interest in making sure that one of the closest allies” they ever have remain strong.
He added: "But ultimately these are decisions that are to be made by the folks there."
The US president also expressed his concerns over the possibility of the UK leaving the EU, which he said would unlike be "advantageous” for the UK and added that it would have an “enormous impact” on it economy and political life.
The president made the remarks despite a US diplomat previously saying the country would remain neutral in both debates.
