Council And School Workers To Join Strike Day

Members of the GMB union will stage a walk out on 10 July, in an action that could see more than one million workers on strike after the union voted three to one in favour if action.

The GMB action was passed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the union's national officer Brian Strutton said it had “spoken loud and clear”.

The date has been earmarked as a general protest day over government policies on cutting public sector costs and jobs.

The public service union Unison also voted to strike over pay on the same day, alongside the National Union of Teachers.

If the actions go ahead the government will face a strike of up to one million public sector workers with council staff, school support workers, teachers and civil servants involved.

Mr Strutton said: "With other unions involved too, 10 July looks like being the second biggest dispute ever, with up to two million workers on strike."
