Defending Tour Champ Chris Froome Withdraws From Race

The defending Tour de France champion, Briton Chris Froome, has been forced to withdraw from the race following two crashes during stage five.

The British rider had fallen early in the race in wet conditions but had continued to ride. However, following a second fall, with 66km of the race to go, he pulled out.

Froome had also suffered a fall during stage four of the Tour, but was cleared to ride followed an x-ray.

Fellow British rider Mark Cavendish also retired from the race following a crash near the finish of stage one.
