£40m investment in walk-in centres unveiled

A new £40 million investment programme in NHS Walk-In Centres has been announced by the government today.

The money will be invested over the next three years and it is hoped that it will create faster and more convenient access to primary care for NHS patients.

NHS Walk-In Centres provide quick access to advice and treatment for minor complaints, and no appointment is necessary. More than 3 million attendances have been recorded at 42 walk-in centres sites since 2000.

As they develop, the new centres will offer independent prescribing by nurses and access to GP services. This will mean that more patients will receive treatment and prescriptions at Walk-In Centres without having to go to their own practice.

Health Minister John Hutton said: "We know that the public want and expect fast and convenient access to services in primary care. Some have even been put off making an appointment with their GP because they could not get a routine appointment outside normal working and travelling times.

"They want the flexibility to be able to choose to access services at times and locations which are convenient to their lifestyle."

During May 2003, there were 130,369 visits to NHS Walk-in Centres. The average daily attendance was 100 visits, which represents a 16% growth over May 2002.
