Two Seriously Injured In House Explosion
Two men are being treated in hospital for "serious burns" following an explosion at a house in Carmarthenshire.
According to reports, there was an explosion at a house on Hafod Road, Tycoes, at around 16:20 on Monday.
An investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway, but an initial search didn't find any gas leaks or damage to gas mains.
DNA Fingerprinting Inventor Honoured With World's Oldest Science Award
Professor Sir Alec Jefferys, the inventor of genetic fingerprinting, has been awarded to Royal Society's Copley Medal, the world's oldest science prize.
Professor Jeffreys is said to have "stumbled on" the method for distinguishing individuals based on their DNA in 1984.
The discovery went on to transform forensic science and resolve questions of identity and kinship.
"I am particularly delighted that the award recognises our work extending over three decades into exploring DNA diversity and the processes that generate this variation, and not just our accidental foray into forensic DNA," Prof Jeffreys said.
Patients Alerted After Hospital Equipment Not Cleaned Properly
An alert has been issued to hundreds of patients following the discovery that equipment at Cumberland Infirmary was not properly cleaned.
Some 357 patients have received a letter from North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust telling them that machines used to clean endoscopes did not use enough disinfectant.
An endoscope is a tube with a camera at the end, which is inserted into the body and sends back video images.
The trust said the risk of infection was very low but it was offering those concerned a blood test as a precaution.
The tests will be for hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
The patients the trust contacted were those who had an endoscopy between 20 May and 19 June this year.
