Homes Evacuated As Disused Factory Burns

Dozens of homes in Leicester have been evacuated due to a major fire at a disused factory.

The alarm was raised at about 07:15 this morning after the blaze broke out at a disused factory in Melton Road in the city centre.

Roads surrounding the area have been closed and caused major disruptions to the morning rush hour traffic.

Local reports suggest that the building has collapsed. Fire crews are still on site battling the blaze. Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to avoid the area.

Cannabis Factory Uncovered In Cardiff Hospital
Police in Cardiff searching for a missing person have uncovered a cannabis farm in a disused ward of a psychiatric hospital. It is understood that around 30 cannabis plants were uncovered by officers during a search at Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff. News of the cannabis farm was revealed in a report by the BBC.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Major fire causes disruption in Manchester city centre
A major fire has destroyed a five-storey office building in Manchester, spreading to a second building. The fire broke out on Dale Street around 5:55am on Monday morning. It is understood that the initial fire has been brought under control, but the building is now in danger of collapsing.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.
