Peter Kay Switches On Blackpool Illuminations

Peter Kay has switched on this year's Blackpool Illuminations.

The comedian hosted the famous switch-on event, which was also attended by former X Factor winners Little Mix.

The illuminations were turned on at 9.30pm on Friday night.

The promenade lights will shine each night until 9 November.

Covering a distance of six miles, the Blackpool Illuminations attracted millions of visitors each year.

Two Die In Explosion At Wedding Party

Two people killed in an explosion in Cumbria at the weekend are said to have been technicians who were working on a fireworks display for a wedding party.

At around 3.15pm on Saturday (30 August), a loud bang was heard in the Windermere area, followed by a number of smaller explosions.

It is thought the fireworks for the display had been stored in a shed when they caught fire.

The body of a man and a woman were later found in the shed.

Police said no one from the wedding party was reported missing in the incident. It has been reported that the deceased were technicians preparing the display.

A joint investigation is now underway into how the explosion occurred.

Missing Teen 'Found Safe And Well'

A teenage girl reported missing from Crawley has been found "safe and well", police have confirmed.

Over the weekend, an appeal was launched after Lacey Easen, 15, was said to be missing. She was seen at around 9.20pm on Friday (29 August), having been spotted leaving the care home at Gales Drive, Crawley, where she had been staying.

She is understood to have gone missing on a number of occasions in the past and has connections in the Brighton area.

In a statement, police said the teenager had been found in the early hours of Monday morning.

Missing Dog Rescued From Cliff

A dog which has been missing for more than a week has been rescued and returned to its owners.

Sprig, a springer spaniel, went missing while on a walk with its owners on 22 August in Devon.

During a training exercise on Sunday, an RNLI lifeboat crew found the dog on a ledge.

At first, the crew thought it was a sheep that had been stranded on the ledge, but as they got closer, they realised it was a dog.

The crew approached the cliffs after believing a sheep was trapped on the ledge, when they noticed the dog further down the cliff.

Burnt Remains Found Beneath Car Park Fire
Police are investigation the discovery of burnt human remains found beneath a pile of burning debris in a Sainsbury’s carp park. A police dog handler spotted the fire in the supermarket car park in Chippenham in Wilts during a routine patrol around 3 am on Tuesday morning. The body was discovered once firefighters had extinguished the fire.

Twenty Dogs Die In East Yorkshire House Fire
Humberside Fire and Rescue have confirmed that twenty dogs have died in a fire in East Yorkshire. It is understood that a fire broke out at the home of a private dog breeder on Graingers Road, Hornsea, at about 19:00 on Saturday.

Owners To Face Longer Sentences Over Dog Attacks
Irresponsible dog owners who allow their dog to attack people or assistance dogs will face tougher prison sentences from today, Tuesday. Changes to the Dangerous Dogs Act will also mean dog owners can now face prosecution if their dog attacks a person in their home or on any private property, except if they attack a trespasser.

Govt Proposes New Sentencing For Fatal Dog Attacks
New proposals for England and Wales could see owners of dogs that attack and kill face a life sentence in prison. Currently, the maximum sentence is two years for those convicted of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control. Under proposals put forward by the government, a range of new sentences would be available, from seven years to life.
