Iconic Leeds Music Venue Not To Reopen

Iconic Leeds music venue, the Cockpit, has closed.

Opened in 1994 the venue was closed in July for "essential maintenance", however, management at the venue have now announced that it will not reopen.

A changing live music industry has been blamed for the closure.

Science Museum Reveals New Mathematics Gallery

The Science Museum in London has revealed that it has received its largest ever individual donation of £5m.

The money, given by David and Claudia Harding, is to be used for a new mathematics gallery, to be designed by Zaha Hadid, who was being the Aquatic Centre for the London Olympics.

The permanent gallery will explore mathematicians' tools and ideas from the 17th Century to the present day, and is expected to open in 2016.

Actor Howell Evans Dies Aged 86

Actor Howell Evans has died aged 86.

The Welsh actor, comedian and singer was best known for his TV role playing Daddy in Stella with Ruth Jones.

He also appeared in Coronation Street, Casualty and Open All Hours.

His agent said that Mr Evans "died surrounded by his family on Tuesday."

New Library Of Birmingham To Be Officially Opened
Malala Yousafzai will today officially open the new Library of Birmingham, a £189m building housing more than one million books, some 200 public access computers, an exhibition gallery, music rooms and theatres. Yousafzai, a teenager from Pakistan, was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen for promoting education for girls.

Wedding Venue Fined Over Guest's Death
The Sully Sports and Leisure Club in the Vale of Glamorgan has been fined £20,000 following the death of a guest. 62-year-old Bob Kemp fell and broke his neck when he stumbled over a low wall at the club in June 2012. The patio lights at the wedding venue were not working.

Work Begins On 2014 Games Venue
Construction work is set to begin on the Barry Buddon site in preparation for next year's Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014 has confirmed. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee are working together to ensure that Barry Buddon in Carnoustie will host Shooting at the Games.

Man Jailed Over Wedding Venue Bomb Threat
A man has been jailed for 12 months over a hoax bomb threat he made to a wedding venue to try and cover up for forgetting to confirm his booking. 36-year-old Neil McArdle, of Melbourne Crescent, Liverpool, was due to be married at Liverpool Register Office in St George's Hall in April.

Hearing Underway To Decide Date And Venue Of New Hillsborough Inquest
A hearing is underway at the Family Division of the High Court in London to decide on the date and location of a fresh inquest into the deaths of the 96 Hillsborough victims. A new inquest was ordered after High Court judges quashed the original accidental death verdicts in December.
