Ebola Vaccine Trials Underway In Oxford
Sixty healthy volunteers are to take part today in the first trial of an experimental Ebola vaccine.
Funded by the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, and the UK Department for International Development, the Oxford trial will see the volunteers injected with the vaccine – which contains only a small portion of genetic material from the Ebola virus, that cannot cause the disease.
The vaccine has reached the trial stage much faster than the process would usually take. But it is understood that the scale of the Ebola outbreak in west Africa has seen the potential vaccine fast-tracked.
If successful it is hoped that the vaccine could be used to treat health workers by the end of the year.
