Judge slams Eddie Jordan as ‘unsatisfactory’ witness

Leading Formula 1 sponsor Vodafone has successfully defended a High Court case brought against it by Jordan F1 team boss, Eddie Jordan.

Mr Jordan brought the £150 million suit against the mobile phone provider claiming that the company had reneged on a sponsorship agreement. The deal, it was claimed, was worth around £100 million for the 2001 season.

But in a damning judgment issued yesterday, Mr Justice Langley described Mr Jordan as a “wholly unsatisfactory” witness.

The judge was also highly critical of "inaccuracies" in documentation produced by Mr Jordan during the six-week long trial - in a case that he said was “contrived and unsustainable”.

On Friday, Mr Jordan attempted to abandon their suit and apply to have the finding - which is deeply scathing of the F1 boss - made privately.

However, as Mr Jordan did not lodge an appeal, Mr Justice Langley said that he would make his ruling public. And in his findings, he said that with the sums involved the “inherent improbability” of there being a verbal agreement such as that claimed by Jordan was “obvious”.

It is thought that Mr Jordan will have to pay the legal costs estimated at several million pounds.

Vodafone argued it had only ever entered into negotiations with Jordan along with several other Formula 1 teams in early 2001.

Vodafone currently sponsor Ferrari, a deal stuck for the Monaco Grand Prix in 2001.
