Problems Hit New DVLA Tax System

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has admitted it is struggling to cope with an "unprecedented demand" on its services.

The problems come on the first day of a new system where it is no longer necessary for drivers to display a paper tax disc on their windscreen.

However, thousands of drivers have been left unable to renew their car tax online. The DVLA confirmed its website had seen " an unprecedented volume of traffic".

It added that some 270,000 enquiries had been made to the site, 30,000 more than the same day last year.

The DVLA apologised for the disruption caused and said those who need to renew their tax urgently could do so over the phone, or at a Post Office.
