Alex Younger Appointed Chief Of The Secret Intelligence Service

Alex Younger has been appointed as the next Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), the Foreign Secretary has announced.

He been appointed as successor to Sir John Sawers as Chief of the SIS. Alex will take up his appointment next month.

Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond said: "I am pleased to announce that Alex Younger has been appointed as the next Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service. The work of SIS is world-class, and its operation vital to the safety and security of the United Kingdom. Alex brings a wealth of relevant experience including his work in Afghanistan and helping keep the country safe during the London 2012 Olympics. I’d also like to thank Sir John Sawers for his strong leadership, and personal commitment to a modernising agenda. I wish him well for the future."

Professor Dame Sally Davies has been named as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England, the first woman to hold the post. The CMO is the Government’s most senior medical advisor, responsible for providing expert advice on a wide range of issues relating to the health of the nation, including the handling of health related emergencies.

Multi-millionaire banker Bob Diamond is to become the new Chief Executive of Barclays, it has been announced. Mr Diamond will take over from the current Chief Executive John Varley on March 31 next year. Mr Diamond is currently President of Barclays and Chief Executive of Corporate & investment Banking and Barclays Wealth.

Chief Inspector of Prisons Appointed
Nicholas Hardwick has been appointed Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, the Justice Secretary confirmed today . Mr Hardwick, currently the Chair of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, was selected as the preferred candidate to succeed Dame Anne Owers.
