Queen Lays Wreath At Ceramic Poppy Installation

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have made an official visit to the ceramic poppies installation at the Tower of London.

The Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation contains a red ceramic poppy for each fallen World War One serviceman and woman.

The Queen laid a wreath at the site, which by Armistice Day will contain 888,246 ceramic poppies, one for each British and colonial death during the War.

Men Arrested After Horse Found Shot Dead

Police in North Yorkshire have arrested two men in connection with the discovery of a dead horse in the garden of a house in Raskelf.

It is understood that the horse was found at about 21:40 on Wednesday, it had been shot through the head.

Two men, aged 36 and 53, have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and remain in custody, a police spokesman said.

Duke Of Marlborough Dies Aged 88

Blenheim Palace has announced the death of the Duke of Marlborough, John Spencer-Churchill.

A spokesperson has said that the 11th Duke of Marlborough "passed away peacefully" early on Thursday morning. He was 88-years-old.

John Churchill was the military commander who led the Allied forces in the Battle of Blenheim.

Blenheim Palace, a Unesco World Heritage Site, remains open as usual, "as per his wishes", the spokesman added.

Thieves Target Commemorative Ceramic Poppies
Commemorative ceramic poppies that were "planted" at the Tower of London to mark the deaths of soldiers during World War One are being targeted by thieves. The display – made up of 888,246 ceramic poppies – is currently being removed by thousands of volunteers following the end of the exhibition on 12th November.

Mayor Of London Hopes To Extend Poppy Display
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has called for the ceramic poppy display to be kept at the Tower of London. The display, called Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red, represents each British and colonial service person who died during World War One.

Afghanistan Highlighted In Poppy Appeal
As another solider killed in Afghanistan was today laid to rest, Dame Vera Lynn and soprano Hayley Westenra have launched the Royal British Legion's 2009 Poppy Appeal. The pair held hands as they sang wartime classic We'll Meet Again to a crowd gathered at Horse Guards Parade in central London.
