GPs To Be Paid For Dementia Diagnoses
NHS England have announced that GPs are to be paid £55 for each new diagnoses of dementia.
It is understood the payments are to be made in an effort to increase the number of sufferers receiving treatment for the condition.
Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of symptoms that result from a number of different diseases of the brain.
Critics of the new payment scheme, the Patients Association, have claimed it is "a step too far".
NHS England explained that the payments would be made for each new patient given a diagnoses over a six-month period.
However, it added that it was not just "payment for diagnoses", saying that GPs would have to show a detailed plan and improving diagnoses rates.

Diagnoses of new HIV infections remain high
The number of new cases of HIV recorded in the UK continued to grow at a high rate in 2005. Health Protection Agency (HPA) figures revealed that there were 5,560 new HIV diagnoses reported for 2005, but the figure is expected to exceed 7,750 when all the reports for the year are known.

Dementia Research 'Underfunded'
Dementia research in the UK remains more underfunded than other serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, an Alzheimer charity warned today, it has been claimed. It costs the health service five times more to treat a dementia patient than the average person suffer from cancer.

HPA issues warning following massive rise in HIV diagnoses
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has warned that cases of HIV have risen exponentially, and anticipates a record 7,000 cases of the disease to have been diagnosed over last year. According to new figures compiled by the HPA, newly diagnosed cases of HIV have increased by 20% between 2002 and 2003.

GPs Now Paid £110K
GPs are now enjoying the benefits of the protracted national pay negotiations that led a settlement in 2003/2004. The average family doctor’s pay in the UK rose by 10% to £110,000 in just 12 months, according to latest figures. The data from the NHS Information Centre is for the year 2005-6 - the second year of the new GP contract.

Public Workers 48-Hour Strike Begins
More than 270,000 civil and public servants from across the UK have begun a 48 hour stoppage over cuts to redundancy terms. Courts, jobcentres, driving tests, tax offices, border controls and passports are amongst some of the services that will be affected by the strike action taken by Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) members.
