NAO Say Govt Flood Defence Spending 'Insufficient'

The National Audit Office (NAO) has warned that the UK's flood defences are likely to "deteriorate faster" as the money being spent on maintaining them is "insufficient".

A report from the NAO claims that half of the country's defences received a "minimal level" of maintenance which was insufficient to secure homes.

It claims in December 2013, some five million properties were at risk of flooding.

The government however, said it is spending "more than ever" on flood defences.

The NAO report added that while the government had improved the cost effectiveness of it flood defence spending, it would be faced with the "difficult decisions around whether to continue maintaining some flood defences" or whether to let them "lapse".
