Permanent Memorial For Lee Rigby To Be Erected In Middleton

A bronze drum is to erected in Middleton as a permanent memorial to murdered soldier Lee Rigby.

Fusilier Rigby was murdered near Woolwich Barracks in London on 22nd May 2013 in an attack by two British Muslim converts. He was 25-years-old.

Rochdale Borough Council has announced that as Mr Rigby was a drummer with the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a bronze drum will be unveiled in his home town of Middleton in February 2015.

The memorial will be installed at the town's memorial garden along with a plaque and a stone commemorating other local soldiers.

The council said it is working closely with Mr Rigby's family to design a tribute "befitting his memory and bravery".

Man Charged With Murder Of Lee Rigby
A man has been charged over the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby, Metropolitan Police has confirmed. Michael Adebowale, 22, was charged following his release from hospital after authorisation from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Drummer Rigby was hit by a car before being hacked to death in a street attack in Woolwich last week.

Drummer Lee Rigby To Be Given Military Funeral On July 12
Drummer Lee Rigby will receive a military funeral at Bury Parish Church in Greater Manchester on July 12. The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers soldier was murdered as he made his way back to his barracks in Woolwich in south-east London in May. An MoD spokesman has said the Drummer Rigby's service will be private but shall be broadcast over a PA system.
