Universal Credit To Be Extended To Families

Universal Credit (UC) is to be extended to families for the first time, it has been announced.

UC is described as the government's "flagship" welfare reform programme, and prior to this was only available to single people and couples.

The new benefit, which merges six working-age benefits into a single payment, will now be made available to families, starting in north-west England.

The introduction of UC has been delayed, however Work and Pensions Secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, has insisted all systems have been "tested" and will be rolled out "carefully".

Universal Credit merges income-based jobseeker's allowance, income-related employment and support allowance, income support, child tax credit, working tax credit and housing benefit into a single payment and is designed to encourage work and reduce fraud.
