Drugs 'mule' jailed for five years

A London woman has been sentenced to five years imprisonment after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle 500 grams of heroin worth £30,000 into the UK.

Leah Nicole St Pier (24), of Roehampton, London, appeared before at Harrow Crown Court where she was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Upon sentencing Mr Justice Moss stated that by "being a mule", she was providing valuable assistance on a serious importation and that the organisers had entrusted to her a quantity of heroin.

St Pier was stopped by Customs officers at Luton Airport on 10th March 2003 having arrived from Amsterdam on an Easyjet flight.

Customs spokesperson, Shona Lowe, said: "This sentence should act as a deterrent to those wishing to get involved in this type of criminal activity, the penalties are high and both Customs and the Courts take class A drug smuggling very seriously."
