Kirtley the hero as South Africa succumb at Trent Bridge

England today pulled off a spectacular victory in the second test against South Africa to level the series 1-1 – and give Michael Vaughn his first win as test captain.

On an unpredictable Trent Bridge wicket, South African wickets tumbled in much the same fashion as home side's did on Sunday. Man-of-the-match, and debutant, James Kirtley took six for 34 – four of which fell this morning as England went on to take the keenly contested affair by 70 runs.

But at one stage this morning, it seemed as though South Africa may rescue an unlikely win as Mark Boucher took the crease for a 45-run partnership with Paul Adams. He eventually edged off Kirtley for 52, to end an unlikely middle-order surge.

And it was Kirtley who finished off the tail end when he took the wicket of an injured Steve Harmison, who was nursing a calf injury. Andy Flintoff bagged the only other wicket of the day's play when took the stumps of Shaun Pollack from a no ball.

Despite being dismissed for 118 in the second innings, England's first innings lead was enough to contain the visitors, notwithstanding Boucher's stubborn form.

South Africa were all out for 139.
