Britain's Oldest Person Dies Aged 114

The last person living in the UK born in the reign of Queen Victoria has died aged 114.

Born on 27 May 1900, Ethel Lang lived in the South Yorkshire town of Barnsley her whole life.

A spokesperson from the Water Royd Nursing home where Mrs Lang lived since 2005 confirmed she died on Thursday.

Gladys Hooper, of Ryde on the Isle of White, is now Britain's oldest person at age 111.

National Gallery Staff Return To Work Following Strike
Staff members at the National Gallery have returned to work after an agreement was reached to end a dispute over privatisation. Members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union took industrial action on 11 August. Since February, it has taken more than 100 days of strike action.

'Billions' Of Welfare Cuts Announced In Budget
Chancellor George Osborne has unveiled the first Conservative Budget since 1996 at the House of Commons. The Budget will see billions of welfare cuts come into effect, while a new "national living wage" of over £9 an hour will be introduced by 2020. Student grants are also being dropped, while benefits will be frozen.

1,000 Tonnes Of Tyre On Fire In North Yorkshire
One thousand tonnes of tyres are on fire in North Yorkshire, grounding flights at a nearby airfield. Up to 70 firefighters are tackling the tyre blaze at a recycling plant in Sherburn-in-Elmert, which broke out at around 08:40 on Thursday morning. Residents living near the plant have been advised to keep all windows and doors closed.
