Plain Cigarette Packaging Vote Brought Forward

MPs will vote on a proposed law to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes before the next general election.

Public Health Minister Jane Ellison, said that "all the evidence" pointed to the move having a positive impact on public health.

The move however is expected to be strongly opposed by the cigarette industry.

Addressing MPs Minister Ellison said: "We cannot be complacent. We all know the damage smoking does to health.

"This government is completely committed to protecting children from the harm that tobacco causes."

Government launches consultation on smoking proposals
The government is to begin consultation on proposals to ban smoking in most public places in England. The government hopes that the consultation will lead to a Bill being introduced in the autumn. MPs To Vote On Plain Cigarette Packaging
MPs will vote later today, Wednesday, on the proposed introduction of plain cigarette packaging. If passed, the new law will see cigarettes packaging standardised for all brands, with the brand name accompanied by health warnings and graphic photos.

New Public Health School Launched
A new public health research school designed to build closer relations between researchers and practitioners across Public Health England and Local Authorities was launched today by Public Health Minister Anne Milton.
