Lorry cleared from West Coast rail line
An articulated lorry has been cleared from the railway tracks between Abington and Carstairs on the West Coast main line in Scotland.
The line reopened within three hours when the lorry had been removed and the line inspected for damage.
Police said that the cab of the lorry came to rest on the tracks at around 4am on Wednesday morning when the lorry left the road. The 63-year-old driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The northbound side of the M74 was reduced to one lane while the lorry was removed from the main line near the number 14 junction at Elvanfoot.
However there was no damage to the railway line and the services using the West Coast line resumed within three hours of the incident.
Though two Virgin West Coast services were halted at Carlisle, traffic on the line had already been reduced due to major engineering work being carried out on the track south of the border between Euston and Milton Keynes.
The West Coast main line is not expected to reopen fully until Monday following completion of the engineering work by Network Rail.
The work on the line is part of a multi-billion upgrade of the West Coast main line which, when it is completed by next year, will reduce travel times between Manchester and London by up to 30 minutes.
