College Announces Job Cuts

Coleg Gwent College in south Wales has announced that up to 130 jobs are at risk following further funding cuts.

The college said it needs to save £5.7m from its budget after the Welsh government cut £29.9 million from the education budget.

The college, which has campuses in Ebbw Vale, Newport, Crosskeys, Pontypool and Usk, said it is consulting with staff and trade unions and will be seeking voluntary redundancies.

Principle of the college, Jim Bennett, said that while he appreciates the "pressures that the Welsh government is facing with their own funding being reduced from Westminster, but the real impact of these cuts on learners, jobs, communities and the people of Wales will be very serious".
