Boy rescued from sea dies

The seven-year-old boy rescued after being swept away by rough seas while playing on a Dorset beach last week has died in his mother’s arms.

Jack Shelton from Briscombe near Stroud in Gloucestershire had been paddling at the water's edge with his 11-year-old-sister when he got into trouble at around 11am last Thursday.

On the day of Jack’s rescue, 35-year-old holidaymaker Michael Beatwell from Poulton-le-Fylde in Lancashire was drowned when freak waves carried him out to sea while trying to help reach Jack.

In a critical condition for five days, Jack was transferred to Bristol Royal Hospital for Sick Children from Southampton General Hospital at the weekend.

The boy’s mother and another rescuer who attempted to reach the boy required hospital treatment for minor injuries they received.

The family were on holiday at a caravan in Burton Bradstock, Dorset when the tragedy occurred.
