Nursing Home Residents Evacuated During Fire

All residents of a nursing home in Sutton had to be evacuated in the early hours of Wednesday morning due to a fire.

Six engines and 30 firefighters responded to reports of a fire on the Avenue in Cheam just before 2am.

It is understood that the fire affected the top floor and roof space of the three storey home. All residents and staff were safely evacuated and there were no reports of any injuries.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) Station Manager Simon Brownings who was at the scene said: “When they arrived crews were faced with a serious fire affecting the top floor and roof space of the home. Firefighters worked hard to bring it under control and thankfully the property was safely evacuated.”

LFB said that the incident ended at about 4am, but a number of firefighters remain at the scene, monitoring the situation.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
