British Airways Plane Catches Fire On Runway

A British Airways flight bound for London has caught fire at Las Vegas airport.

All 172 people on board have been evacuated via emergency slides. It is understood at least 14 people have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The flight, BA2276 was due to travel from Las Vegas to London Gatwick on Tuesday, but the aircraft – a 777-200 – experienced a "technical issue as it was preparing for take-off" from McCarran International Airport.

The aircraft was evacuated safely and emergency services at the airport extinguished the fire.

In a distress call, the captain can be heard asking for the airport's emergency services.

"Speedbird Mayday Mayday. Speedbird 2276 request fire services."

"Speedbird 2276 heavy, we are evacuating on the runway. We have a fire, repeat, we are evacuating."

He is later quoted as saying that the plane suffered a "catastrophic failure of the engine."

A total of 157 passengers were on the flight, along with 10 cabin crew and three pilots.

The passengers have been provided with hotel accommodation, the airline added in a statement.

An investigation is now underway.
