British soldier dies in Iraq
A British soldier has died in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has announced today.
Sergeant John Nightingale, aged 32, died in a firearms incident on September 23 and not as a result of hostile action, the MoD said. The incident occurred whilst he was stationed at Shaibah, near Basrah.
The circumstances are being fully investigated by the Royal Military Police.
Sergeant Nightingale came from Leeds and was a Territorial Army soldier with 217 Transport Squadron, part of 150 Regiment (Volunteers) of the Royal Logistic Corps.
He was serving in Iraq with 27 Regiment RLC, at Shaibah Logistic Base.
Lt Col John Bevan, Commanding Officer of 27 Composite Logistic Support Regiment, said: “Sergeant John Nightingale was a good man, a strong character and excellent senior Non-Commissioned Officer who had an impact on the working and social lives of many in the unit during our tour here in Iraq. He will be missed by all of us.
“His death has come as a terrible shock for all in the Regiment and especially for those in his Squadron that knew him well. He was a popular character, well regarded by those who met and worked with him and his loss will be felt throughout the Regiment."
"He will be missed not only by those of us in Theatre but also by his comrades in 150 Regiment, his friends at work and by his close family and friends. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this time.”

Soldiers save abandonded baby in Iraq
British soldiers in southern Iraq saved an abandoned baby whilst carrying out a search operation today. Troops from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment found the baby girl during a search in Basrah. The prematurely born baby girl had been hidden in a metal box and "appeared close to death", according to an MoD spokesperson.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the death of Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, The Royal Army Veterinary Corps, 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, who died in Afghanistan on Tuesday. Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Liam Richard Tasker deployed to Afghanistan on 8 September 2010 as part of 1st Military Working Dog Regiment.

The Ministry of Defence has named the British soldier killed in Afghanistan at the weekend as Corporal Darryl Gardiner from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Cpl Gardiner, 25, was serving in Afghanistan attached to 5th Regiment Royal Artillery and 52 Brigade's Reconnaissance Force.

Privates Joseva Lewaicei, 25, and Adam Morris, 19, both of the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment, died as a result of injuries sustained from a roadside bomb that occurred around 11.45pm local time in Basra, southern Iraq, on Saturday.

Prince Harry to serve in Iraq
Prince Harry's regiment is set to deploy to Iraq later this year, the Ministry of Defence and Clarence House have confirmed. In a joint statement, the MoD and Clarence House confirmed that the 22-year-old prince would be in command of a troop from 'A Squadron' of the Household Cavalry Regiment.
