Viral Birthday Card Appeal Woman Dies

A 100-year-old woman, who received thousands of birthday cards following an appeal by BBC Radio Sheffield, has died.

Winnie Blagden was sent over 16,000 cards from across the world earlier this year after a Facebook post went viral and was viewed by millions of people.

The appeal was launched after it was discovered she had no surviving friends and family. Hundreds of cards were sent from across the globe, including the US, Australia, Romania and Japan.

Other senders included Prime Minister David Cameron and actor Dustin Hoffman.

Police Appeal Following Fatal RTC

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was killed in a fatal collision in Greenwich.

The incident happened on Friday 9 October on Lewisham Road, close to the junction with Friendly Place.

Officers were called at around 9.20am to reports of a lorry colliding with a female pedestrian.

The victim, who was in her 80s, was taken by air ambulance to hospital in a critical condition. She died on Sunday 11 October.

The lorry driver, a 52-year-old man, was arrested in connection with the investigation and his since been bailed to a date in mid-October.

It is understood the collision occurred as the lorry pulled away from traffic lights.

Enquiries are continuing.

Charity Unhappy About Approach To Bird Shooting

The Welsh Ornithological Society (WOS) has raised concerns over the Welsh Government's approach to the shooting of birds.

The charity is concerned that licences are being issued to anglers to kill birds such as Goosanders and Cormorants.

It warned that killing the birds could lead to the long-term decline of some species.

The Society has now written to the natural resources minister, calling for a change in the policy, and citing that the Welsh Government has no proof the species are detrimental to fish stocks.

WOS President Iolo Williams said: "The Welsh Government claims to be an evidence-led organisation. In the case of the White-fronted Goose, Ministers have been presented with clear evidence from international experts and have chosen to ignore it.

"In licensing the killing of birds just because they eat fish, it has no evidence of serious damage nor of the impact of shooting on the birds' populations. In both cases the Welsh Government is probably in breach of the law and international conservation agreements. It is about time it took its conservation duties seriously."
