Reid: Student doctor numbers rise by 50%

The number of student doctors has risen by 50% since 1997 from 5,050 to 7,662, Health Secretary John Reid has said today.

There are also 2,250 more medical school places and four new medical schools have opened their doors within the last year, the minister added.

The number of applicants to medical school has been steadily rising, with 26% more applicants for entry in 2003 compared to the previous year.

Mr Reid said that the NHS would not only have more doctors than ever before, but they would be better trained than ever.

"They are being taught to put the patient at the centre of the service, which is the ethos of a modern NHS," he said.

"However, despite this very encouraging increase in student doctors, we are not complacent and we realise that there is much more to be done to boost the NHS workforce."
