New Deal scheme helps to regenerate communities
A scheme that gives local people the power to make decisions on regenerating their communities is showing results, according to an independent report.
Early indications show that most of the 39 New Deal for Communities partnerships are starting to tackle problems with crime, education, health, employment and housing.
The scheme was launched in 1999 to focus on the most deprived neighbourhoods in England. People living in the New Deal areas are already benefiting from the first £430 million of a planned £2 billion investment over 10 years.
Yvette Cooper, Minister in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, said neighbourhoods blighted by years of under-investment are beginning to turn the corner.
"But importantly, this is a result of giving local people for the first time the power and resources to revitalise their communities, so they can identify their priorities and needs. Today's independent evaluation is welcome news for local communities," she said.
Lessons learnt will help NDCs to develop and continue to deliver real change, to create places where people want to live, not leave, she added.

A Bigger Role For Communities In Inspiring Young People
Young people will get extra encouragement to unlock their talents as part of a £10m Inspiring Communities initiative, Communities Secretary Hazel Blears announced today. The Government's New Opportunities White Paper argued that social mobility has improved in recent years. Some 600,000 youngsters have been lifted out of poverty in the last decade.

Police "Name And Shame' Limit Imposed
Police forces which "name and shame" criminals must remove the details from websites after a month, new rules state. The personal details of criminals' such as their name, age, where they are from and their offence, should be published routinely, the Ministry of Justice has said. A specific reason will be needed to publish photographs.
