NHS consultants back new contract

NHS consultants have voted in favour of a new contract – with six-out-of-10 doctors backing the new deal – the British Medical Association announced today.

Health Secretary John Reid described the news as a "very good result, both for the NHS and patients". The ballot in favour of a new contract comes after the original proposal was rejected in a previous ballot last year.

"It has taken a long time and a lot of hard work to reach this point but we can now build on this positive outcome and work together to ensure that we continue to drive forward with reforms and improvements to patient care in the NHS," said Mr Reid. "We greatly value NHS consultants for their professionalism, their expertise and the hard work they do for NHS Patients."

He said that all 1.3 million NHS staff have now signed up to new ways of working.

"That'll enable us to deliver an even better service for NHS patients," he said.

The new contract means that there will be: no compulsion to do non-emergency work at evenings or weekends; extra recognition for evening and weekend work; and a fair and balanced appeals procedure to resolve disputes about pay progression and job plans.
