'Vital role' of front line public service staff celebrated
A new booklet launched today highlighting the "vital role" front line staff play in improving public services will be distributed to 30,000 senior managers across the public sector.
The publication 'Leading from the Front Line' contains a number of case studies from across the country.
The Prime Minister's Adviser on Public Sector Reform Wendy Thomson said: "'Leading from the Front Line' highlights the good work happening on the ground - where it really counts for customers and communities. It is services like these, led by committed people that are setting the pace on reform and best practice."
The role of front line staff was reflected also reflected by the Charter Mark awards ceremony. The awards promote "choice, flexibility and innovation in public service".
The 2002 Charter Mark Award Ceremony acknowledged 790 public service winners for excellence in customer services. Over 2,400 public sector organisations are now recognised by the scheme.
Both the booklet and the awards encourage public sector leaders to share their ideas and best practice.

'Progressive' Tory Public Spending Plans
A "progressive" Tory government would cut spending without affecting front line services, the Shadow Chancellor George Osborne has said. Mr Osborne denied the Conservatives planned to hike VAT up to 20%, and cited Sweden as a model for effective educational spending.

The Government has invited experts, public service managers and providers of public services to submit their ideas for public service reform. Their views will help shape the Government's Public Service Reform White Paper, announced in the Spending Review, which will be published next year.

The Culture Secretary has been outlining his sometimes confused plans for decentralised TV services across the UK. In a speech to the Royal Television Society at the end of September, the Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt said the Government's commitment was to decentralise broadcasting and to increase localisation.

BBC Unveils Proposals For Its Future
The BBC has outlined its plans to become "more open and more distinctive" in the future. The proposals are said to herald "a fundamental change of approach for the Corporation", and will reveal how the broadcasters' services will adapt and change in order to meet audience needs for the next decade.
