34 killed in Baghdad suicide bombings
Up to 34 people have been reported killed in four separate attacks by rebels in Baghdad today – the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
Suicide bombers targeted the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and three police stations as Baghdad was rocked by a wave of explosions this morning. An attack on a fourth police station was beaten off. The death toll could yet climb higher as hospitals attempt to cope with the reported 225 people who were injured.
Iraqi authorities are suggesting that 26 of the dead were civilians and eight were policemen.
The ICRC said that two of its Iraqi employees were killed in the outrage. Ten other people in the area were also reported killed.
In a statement, the humanitarian organisation said: "The ICRC condemns this attack in the strongest terms and expresses its heartfelt sympathy to the victims and their families. All deliberate attacks causing death or injury among civilians are strictly prohibited by international humanitarian law and negate the most basic principles of humanity."
The organization said that it would be "reassessing its working conditions in Baghdad over the next few days".
Today's mayhem follows on from a mortar attack on a Baghdad hotel yesterday in which one person was killed and 17 others injured – including a British foreign office official.
The US deputy secretary of state for defense, Paul Wolfowitz, was staying at the al Rasheed Hotel when the six missiles slammed into the building. He was said to be shaken but uninjured.

Security chief killed in latest outbreak of Iraq violence
A senior advisor for the Iraqi government has been killed as violence continues to erupt in the capital of Baghdad. Wael al-Rubaei, director of operations at the National Security Ministry, was ambushed by gunmen and shot dead as he was driven to work. His driver was also killed.

Dozens killed in Baghdad attacks
Another series of attacks on security forces in Baghdad has left as many as 24 people dead. At least 13 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a device at a recruitment centre for the Iraq National Guard. Ten Iraqi police were reported to have been killed during two separate gun attacks, in the west of the Iraqi capital.

Ten US soldiers killed in Baghdad attacks
Ten American soldiers have been killed and four wounded in attacks by insurgents in Iraq. Eight soldiers died in a car bomb attack in the Mahmudiya district of south Baghdad, around 11:30 am local time (7:30 am GMT). A US military spokesman confirmed the soldiers were US Army personnel. Two other American soldiers have also been killed in Iraq.

The death toll in the terror outrages in Karbala and Baghdad yesterday morning has risen to 182, following the bloodiest day Iraq has seen since the end of the war last May. Almost 500 people were injured after coordinated attacks were made against Shi'ite Muslims who were observing the festival of Ashura - the holiest day of the sect's calendar.
