Two US soldiers killed and several injured in ambushes

Two US soldiers have been killed and several others wounded in two separate attacks on Coalition troops in Iraq yesterday.

In one incident, about 40 miles northeast of the city of Balad, northern Iraq, two US troops were killed and another was wounded when their tank was destroyed.

Defense department officials said that this was the first main battle tank disabled since the end of major combat on May 1. It is believed that the tank may have struck a land mine or a roadside improvised explosive device.

Earlier reports said that seven Ukrainian troops were wounded in another ambush which targeted members of the Multinational Division Central-South. Based in Hillah, central Iraq, the Polish-led division comprises soldiers from 19 countries.

A multinational division spokesman said the division soldiers have been involved in firefights before, but this was the first one in which they suffered casualties.

The incident occurred when mines disabled two armoured personnel carriers. When the Ukrainian troops left the vehicle, they were fired upon. There were no reports of enemy casualties, the multinational division spokesman said.

The casualty figures from yesterday's car bomb in Falluja have been set at four dead and two wounded.

Coalition officials said the bomber was unable to get past security at the local police station or near the mayor's office, and chose to detonate the car bomb about midway between the two.

Coalition officials said the increase in attacks has operations planners assessing and reassessing the security situation throughout the country.
