£1m boost set to foster greater school links
School Standards Minister David Miliband today announced a £1 million boost to expand co-operation between independent and state schools.
The extra £1 million over the next two years for the pioneering Independent/State School Partnerships Scheme will allow up to 60 new partnerships to be set up – and in so doing, raise teaching standards.
The scheme has already funded 220 partnerships over the past six years, helping around 800 schools in both sectors to forge closer links with one another to raise standards, create opportunities for gifted and talented pupils and share best practice. Some 80,000 pupils have benefited from this scheme.
The principles of collaboration and partnership promoted by this scheme are at the heart of the government's vision for a new specialist system to transform secondary schools. By working together, all schools can provide more opportunities for pupils and staff, share best practice and provide more choice for parents.
David Miliband said: "Raising standards across secondary schools means sharing expertise from every source. These partnerships have proved their worth - so we are creating many more. Working together to raise standards is at the heart of our vision for transforming secondary education and to give every pupil the opportunity to reach their full potential.
"Applications for the next round of partnerships are now open, and I hope to interest many more primary and secondary schools from both the independent and state sector."

£1bn Towards Free School Meals
£1bn is being unlocked to fund the Department of Education's free school meals commitment. The news, announced by deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, follows an announcement in September that every child in reception, year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools will receive a free school lunch.
