Three killed in motorway smash

Three people have been killed and two injured following a car crash on the M20 motorway near West Malling in Kent.

The accident, which occurred at around 10.30pm last night, involved two cars and a motorcycle - one of the vehicles involved was a police patrol car responding to an unrelated emergency call.

Two people travelling in a Vauxhall cavalier and a motorcyclist were killed in the incident. Two police officers were reported to have been injured in the smash and were taken to Maidstone Hospital. They have since been released from hospital, PA news reported today.

The M20 and the M26 were closed following the crash but have since reopened.

Death toll on British roads rises by 2% in 2003
The number of deaths on Britain's roads rose by 2% between 2002 and 2003, according to the latest figures released from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) today. A young boy remains in a serious condition in hospital after being involved in a road traffic incident in the West Midlands yesterday. The 11-year-old was injured following a collision with a car in Wolverhampton. The boy was cycling close to a busy main road in Oldbury at the time.

One killed in helicopter collision
One person has been killed after two RAF helicopters collided in mid-air, it has been reported. According to reports, at least two other people have been injured in the crash, which took place near Market Drayton in Shropshire, just before 3pm on Wednesday. The helicopters involved are believed to be Squirrel training helicopters from RAF Shawbury.
