Strachan to quit as Southampton boss

Southampton manager, Gordon Strachan is to step down as Saints' manager at the end of this season.

In a statement released by the club today, the former Manchester United and Leeds player said he was quitting for "medical and other personal reasons".

Those medical reasons are believed to be a hip replacement operation decided on two years ago by the 46-year-old Scot and his family.

Southampton chairman, Rupert Lowe said he had discussed the decision with Strachan and was now "comfortable" with it.

Strachan, who has been linked with the manager's post at cash strapped Leeds, also quashed rumours that he would be taking up another managerial role elsewhere.

The former Scottish international, who will take charge of the Southampton side as normal for the Premiership trip to Birmingham on Saturday, has enjoyed his most successful stint as a boss with the Saints.

Last season he took his side to the FA Cup final where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Arsenal.

However, they made an early exit from this season's Uefa Cup when they where beaten by Romanian side Steaua Bucharest.

Chairman Rowe will now look for a new manager to take over the reins at St Mary's Stadium, with current Wales boss Mark Hughes emerging as an early front runner.
