Search continues for missing fishermen

The search for three French fishermen, who have been missing since their trawler sank off Cornwall yesterday, has continued today.

The French fishing vessel Cap Burgaled Breiz sank in treacherous conditions some time around lunchtime yesterday, 14 miles off Lizard Point.

Two crew were recovered from the sea in the early stages of the incident but were confirmed as dead upon arrival at hospital in Truro. Both the vessel's life rafts were also located empty along with numerous other pieces of debris but the three other crew members remain unaccounted for.

The search has been hampered by Gale Force 8 winds, rough seas and moderate to poor visibility, Falmouth Coastguard have said.

Coastguard said that a distress call was received at around 12.40pm yesterday, and there followed an intensive air and sea search of the area involving 13 vessels and two rescue helicopters over 127 square miles of sea.

Coastguard have conceded that there is now little chance that the three fishermen will be found alive.
