London 'quality of life' among worst in Europe
London people experience among the worst quality of life in the major Western European capitals, according to the findings of a recent survey.
The survey for Mercer Human Resource Consulting found that London was ranked 11th in the bottom half of the top 15 European cities, just above Milan, Rome, Lisbon and Athens.
London was placed 35th in the overall worldwide MHRC quality of life survey, which covered 215 cities worldwide and is aimed at helping governments and major companies to place employees on international assignments.
The survey evaluation examines 39 quality of life criteria for each city including political, social, economic and environmental factors, personal safety and health, education, transport and other public services.
The survey ranks cities against New York, which is used as the base city rating scoring 100. In top place in Europe were Zurich and Geneva are the world’s top-scoring cities, with 106.5 points.
Cities in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia continued to dominate the top of the rankings: Vienna shared third place with Vancouver, while Auckland, Bern, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Sydney were placed joint fifth.
In the survey, almost half of the top 40 scoring cities are in Western Europe. Helsinki scores highest for health and sanitation, in third position overall and Oslo, Stockholm and Zurich were all ranked joint fifth.
At the other extreme, Athens in 120th position was by far the lowest scoring city in Western Europe in terms of health and sanitation. The low score is mainly due to the high level of pollution in the city, which has been identified as the cause of respiratory illnesses. Milan, Rome, and Lisbon also appear at the lowest end of the rankings for the region, all at position 69 - London is ranked 59th in terms of health and sanitation.
US cities have slipped in the rankings this year as tighter restrictions have been imposed on entry to the country. Increased security checks on arrivals and departures from the country can be very time-consuming for travellers.

Readers Digest survey claims UK cities are unprepared for disaster
A survey by the Reader's Digest has concluded that none of UK's major cities is fully ready to deal with a major disaster or terrorist attack. Emergency planning in 10 cities was studied and it was found that Liverpool was the least prepared. The city was given a score of 55%, its ambulance response times and police force being criticised.

Emergency Text Service To Be Tested
A pilot scheme of a new emergency text message alert system is underway in Glasgow. From 2pm this afternoon, O2 customers will receive three messages as a test of the system. It is understood that the texts will make clear that it is just a test and that they are part of a trial.
