Tolkien tale takes 11 awards at Oscars

The finale of the Lord of the Rings cycle has scooped 11 Oscar's at this year's Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

The film adaptation of the last instalment of JRR Tolkien's fantasy trilogy came away with awards in all 11 categories for which it had been nominated – equalling the records set by Ben Hur and Titanic. In so doing, it became the first fantasy feature to win best film.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was also handed the award of best director for New Zealander Peter Jackson, as well as best score and costume design among others.

It was a quiet night for British nominees with Annie Lennox leading the way for homegrown talent with her best song award, again for the Lord of the Rings.

Sean Penn was named best actor and Tim Robbins best supporting actor both for Mystic River, and Charlize Theron won the best actress Oscar for Monster and Renee Zellweger went home with the best supporting actress award for Cold Mountain.
