New protection centres to help sex assault victims
More victims of sexual assault will be able to receive care and counselling, while at the same time being able to help police investigations, following the announcement today of £250,000 funding for new Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs).
SARCs provide a 'one-stop' location where victims of sexual assault can receive help and advice. Victims also have the opportunity to participate in the forensic examination process, or can choose to provide evidence anonymously if preferred. Through immediate medical care and advice, SARCs also provide short and long term physical and mental health benefits.
The funding will mean six new SARCs across the country will be able to open their doors later this year, and three of the seven existing SARCs will be able to improve their services to victims.
Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said: "Rape is an horrendous crime, which deeply affects the lives of victims and their families, and which inspires fear in our communities.
"These centres provide support and medical help to victims, while helping to get the evidence to prosecute offenders. We want victims to feel more confident from the outset that their case is treated with professionalism and empathy. In turn, this improves their confidence in the criminal justice process and will lead to more reporting and recording of sex offences and ultimately more offenders behind bars."
There are currently seven SARCs operating in the UK: Royal Preston Hospital, Preston; St Mary's, Manchester; the Rhona Cross Centre, Newcastle and Sunderland Royal Hospital, Sunderland; Juniper Lodge, Leicester General Hospital, Leicester; The Haven, Kings College Hospital, London; The Sanctuary, Taw Hill Medical Practice, Swindon; and The Milne Centre and the Cabot Suite, Bristol.
