Fall in number of children killed on Britain's roads

The number of children killed or seriously injured on British roads has fallen by a third in just three years, according to a government report published today.

The report also found that the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads has fallen by 17%.

However, the review pointed out that the total number of road deaths has not fallen significantly since 1998, and there has been a rise in drink-drive related deaths and injuries.

The publication of the first review of the government's Road Safety Strategy coincided with World Health Day, which this year is focussing on the global road safety.

Road safety Minister David Jamieson said he was "delighted" with the progress but warned against complacency.

"Road safety is everyone's responsibility and we need to continue to make all road users aware of how they can contribute to making our roads safer for everyone," he said.
