Kevin Spacey plays down phone 'mugging'
Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey has played down weekend news reports that he was mugged close to his south London home on Saturday morning.
The 44-year-old Oscar-winning actor initially told police that he had been mugged for his mobile phone and had received a minor head injury whilst walking his dog at 4.30am on Saturday.
However, Mr Spacey, who was appointed as artistic director at London's Old Vic last year, said this morning that he had simply been conned by a sob story and had later tripped over his dog.
During an interview on BBC Radio 4's 'Today' programme, Mr Spacey said that he had been incredibly embarrassed by the incident, and confirmed that he later returned to the police station to withdraw the allegation of assault.
Mr Spacey told Radio 4 that, while walking in the park, he had been approached by a man who said that he needed to phone his mother. The actor produced his mobile phone and keyed in the number for the man. However, after handing the phone over, the man ran off, Mr Spacey said.
Apologising to police, the actor said that he had been "taken [in] by the biggest con going".
Police, who had been looking for a 19-year-old black male suspect, said that as far as they were concerned they were no longer pursuing the case.
