Britons favour ID cards if they are free
While four out of five UK citizens support the idea of carrying ID cards, few are prepared to pay for them.
A MORI poll found that 80% of people would be prepared to carry ID Cards as they considered that they would help reduce illegal immigration, prevent identity theft and cut benefit fraud.
But almost 60% said that they did not think that the Government could introduce an ID smoothly and less than 20% said that they would be prepared to fork out the estimated £35 for a card.
The poll of 1,000 people found that 73% said that they did not think that carrying an ID card would infringe civil liberties.
Home Secretary David Blunkett pledged today that the introduction of ID cards would not be a "cock-up".
A draft Bill is expected to be published next week, but the issue has already led a number of cabinet discussions over the measures which are expected to include biometric security.

Research launched today by Travelex reveals consumers are still relying on credit and debit cards abroad, and last month Brits stumped-up £58m in extra charges at ATMs and in retail outlets abroad. This is the equivalent of sending 20,000 families of four on a week-long holiday to the Med.

Britons will spend £17bn shopping online in 2004, says report
The lure of online purchasing will tempt around 20 million British shoppers into spending around £17 billion this year, according to a report by the e-commerce business conglomerate IMRG. The trade body, which includes businesses such as easyJet, Debenhams and Tesco.

Pandemic Flu Drug Stockpiles Set To Double
The UK today awarded contracts to double emergency supplies of flu drugs to treat everyone who is predicted to fall ill in a pandemic, making the UK one of the most prepared countries in the world. The agreements with Roche and GlaxoSmithKline will double antiviral stockpiles, which are expected to be in place by April 2009.
