Coroner returns open verdicts on New Cross fire
A Coroner has returned open verdicts in relation to the deaths of 13 people in a fire in New Cross in 1981.
All had died when a fire swept through a house in south-east London where a birthday party was being held.
While an open verdict had been returned at the original coroners' inquests, a subsequent police investigation was launched in 1997 and a further inquest was ordered.
The victims aged between 13 and 22 were black children and the survivors and the relatives of those who lost their lives had maintained that the fire had been due to a racist attack.
Returning an open verdict, the coroner noted that the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in an armchair in a front room of the house, could not be determined with certainty.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

Fire costs economy £7.7 billion
