Inaugural anti-arson conference begins in London

The first conference designed to explore new methods of tackling arson – a crime that results in around 100 deaths and costs the economy over £2 billion every year – has been held in London today.

Hosted by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM)-led Arson Control Forum (ACF), the aim of the conference is to provide the opportunity for successful arson prevention schemes from across the country to share and allow others to gain from their experiences.

Fire Safety Minister Phil Hope said: "We recognise that arson is one of the major fire threats facing us today. Every year it costs the economy an unacceptable £2.2 billion and, more importantly, is the cause of 100 fire deaths.

"We have already had some success with arson prevention schemes across England and Wales, in both cities and rural areas. This conference provides the first opportunity to hear more about these successful schemes as well as to discuss more innovative solutions to continue the fight against arson."

Established in 2001, the ACF has invested more than £9 million in arson prevention schemes and achieved some successes. Latest figures show that in the year ending March 2003 this investment has contributed to a 3% fall in the number of deliberate fires attended by fire and rescue services.

Chairman of the ACF, Commander Andy Baker from the Metropolitan Police, said: "Today's conference brings together for the first time those people from across the country who have the experience from successful arson prevention projects. By sharing good practice, we can now move even further forward in the fight against this serious problem."
