Man dies in south Wales house fire

A man in south Wales has died in a house fire after he re-entered his blazing home to ensure his family had escaped safely.

The 36-year-old's wife and four children managed to flee the fire in Matthewstown, but he may have gone back into the house believing a family member was still inside. He died shortly afterwards.

Fire crews attended the scene at around 3am and brought the blaze under control. The man's wife and four children are understood to have been treated for the effects of smoke inhalation at a hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

South Wales Fire Services' Assistant Divisional Officer Gareth Davies said that if a smoke detector had not given the family an early warning, the situation may well have been more serious.

A police investigation is under way.
