RMT suspends election day Tube strike

Strike action by Tube workers, which had been set to coincide with the Mayoral and European elections, has now been suspended, it was announced today.

Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members working on the London Underground "voted overwhelmingly" on Wednesday to strike on the June 10 polling day. The total of votes cast in favour of strike action was 2,614, with 643 against.

However, the RMT executive stepped in today to suspend the action.

The union's general secretary Bob Crow said that the decision was made following emergency talks last night.

He said: "LUL has indicated that it is now prepared to negotiate seriously on all of our aspirations on pay and conditions, including a shorter working week. The door to a long-term deal remains open.

"As a result, further detailed talks are to be held later this month, and next Thursday’s strike has been suspended."

The RMT's pay claim demands include: a "substantial pay rise"; a 32-hour, four-day week; restoration of paid meal breaks (taken away in 1996), and a minimum starting salary of £22,000 (from the current level of £19,000 for station assistants).
