Asda lowers petrol price to under 80p per litre

Retail chain Asda has today pegged the price of petrol sold at its pumps to stay under 80p per litre, and urged rivals to follow its lead.

All Asda's 150 petrol stations will today offer a nationwide price of 79.9p at the pumps for both petrol and diesel. The company said that it made the move following the decision by Opec last week to increase production. Asda is the first nationwide retailer to drop its prices since the Opec decision.

In recent weeks the cost of crude on the financial markets has spiralled from their March level of around $34 for a barrel of oil to a high of over $42, but since the OPEC meeting at the end of last week prices have fallen back, Asda said.

A company spokesperson said: "In line with its commitment to offer motorists the best prices, Asda intends to pass these savings onto customers without any delay - a decision that flies in the face of recent oil company price rises.

"And with most stations charging a premium for diesel, the move to bring both fuels into line will offer all motorists a fairer deal and the chance to share the benefit from recent falls in crude prices."
